If your toaster appears completely dead, the most common causes are a loose plug, a switched-off socket or an internal safety cut-out after overheating. Stop using the toaster immediately if the cord, plug or housing looks damaged, or if you smell burning.
- Confirm that the wall socket works by testing it with another small appliance. If the socket is live, move to the next check.
- Check that the toaster is plugged in firmly and that any wall switch or extension lead is on. If it starts working after this, the problem was the power supply.
- Let the toaster cool fully if it has been used recently. An overheated appliance may need time to reset before it can operate again.
- Look for crumbs or packaging in the slots and ensure the crumb tray is fitted correctly. If the toaster then powers up, a blockage may have been affecting the mechanism.
- If there is still no response, stop using the toaster and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased. Do not open the housing or attempt an electrical repair.
As a prevention step, keep the toaster on a stable, flat surface, away from curtains and other heat-sensitive items. Do not use it with an external timer or separate remote control system unless the product instructions specifically allow it.
