Why does my electric blanket feel too hot after a few minutes?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 2:22 PM

If the blanket becomes uncomfortably hot, stop using it straight away and let it cool. The manuals warn that prolonged use on a high setting can lead to burns, and creased sections can become dangerously hot. fileciteturn0file5turn0file10turn0file11

  1. Switch the blanket off and unplug it. Expected result: the heat should stop quickly once power is removed.
  2. Check whether the blanket was folded, tucked in or compressed under heavy bedding. Expected result: removing folds and pressure should prevent local overheating.
  3. If your model has several settings, restart later on the lowest setting for a short test only. Expected result: the blanket should feel gently warm rather than hot.
  4. Inspect the fabric, controller and cord for any sign of damage. Expected result: a damaged blanket should not be used again.
  5. If the blanket still heats too strongly at the lowest setting, stop using it. Expected result: the product may have a controller or heating fault.

Do not sleep on or continue to use a blanket that feels too hot, shows a burnt smell or leaves the skin red. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased. fileciteturn0file5turn0file11
