A faint smell during the first one or two uses can happen with new electrical appliances, but a strong burnt smell, smoke or repeated odour is not normal. If the smell is sharp, persistent or gets stronger, stop using the kettle.
Use the kettle once with plain water
- Unplug the kettle, let it cool and empty it.
- Fill it with fresh water to a normal level and boil once.
- Pour the water away and allow the kettle to air out.
Expected result: a light first-use odour should fade after rinsing and airing. If it remains strong, continue checking.
Inspect for residue
- Look inside the kettle and around the lid, spout and base area for packaging residue, dust or limescale.
- Clean only as allowed in the care instructions for your model, then rinse well.
Expected result: the kettle should smell neutral once clean and dry. Residue can create an unpleasant smell when heated.
Watch for unsafe signs
- Smoke during heating
- Burning smell that does not clear
- Discolouration, melting or cracking
- Water leaking towards the base or connector area
Expected result: none of these signs should appear in normal use. If any do, stop using the kettle immediately.
If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased. Do not keep testing it if the smell gets worse, as that may indicate a serious fault.
