Why does my kettle make a rattling or buzzing noise while heating?

A light humming sound can be normal as water heats, but loud rattling, buzzing or repeated clicking can point to limescale, an uneven surface or a fault in the kettle. If the noise is sudden, harsh or accompanied by burning smell, stop using the kettle.

Check the fill level and base

1. Unplug the kettle and let it cool.
2. Refill to between the minimum and maximum marks on the water level indicator.
3. Place the kettle on a flat, stable surface and sit it properly on the base.

Expected result: the kettle should heat more evenly and the sound should become steadier. A badly seated kettle or an uneven worktop can make vibration worse.

Inspect for limescale

1. Look inside the kettle for white, crusty deposits on the heating area or around the water line.
2. If scale is present, descale the kettle according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
3. Rinse thoroughly before use.

Expected result: reduced scale usually lowers noise and helps the kettle heat more efficiently. If the noise stays unusually loud after cleaning, continue with the next check.

Check for loose parts

1. Make sure the lid, filter spout or other removable parts are fitted correctly.
2. Listen for a sound that changes when you touch or move a loose part gently while the kettle is unplugged and cool.

Expected result: fitted parts should not rattle. If anything is loose, damaged or missing, do not use the kettle.

Stop using the kettle immediately if the noise is linked to sparking, smoke, a burning odour or overheating. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
