Why does my hair straightener need to cool before I store it?

A hair straightener should be allowed to cool completely before you put it away. Storing it while still hot can damage the cord, nearby surfaces or the appliance itself, and it may also make the plate coating wear faster. If the unit is still unusually hot after switching off, stop using it until it has cooled.

What to do

1. Switch the appliance off and unplug it as soon as you finish styling. Expected result: the indicator should go out and the plates should begin to cool.
2. Place it on a heat-resistant surface with the plates open or in the normal resting position. Expected result: heat should dissipate safely without marking the worktop.
3. Wait until the plates and casing are fully cool before storing the appliance in a drawer, bag or box. Expected result: no warmth should remain at the touch points.
4. Store the cord loosely, not tightly wound around the body of the straightener. Expected result: the cable should keep its shape and not develop hard bends.

Stop using it if...

Stop using the appliance if it stays very hot for a long time, if the cord or plug feels warm after cooling, or if you notice melting, odour or discoloration around the casing.
