Why is my hand blender splashing ingredients everywhere?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 6:21 AM

If your hand blender splashes, the speed, angle or container size is usually the problem rather than the motor. A few simple changes can reduce mess quickly, but stop at once if the splashing is linked to odd noises or overheating.

  1. Switch off and unplug the hand blender before adjusting anything.
  2. Use a deeper container if possible and make sure the blade end is fully submerged before switching on.
  3. Start in short bursts, then move the blender gently through the ingredients.
  4. Lower the speed or use a smaller batch if the mixture is too thin.

If the splashing reduces, the issue was likely technique or container choice. If it continues even with careful use, stop using the appliance and ask the retailer or store where it was purchased for guidance, especially if you are unsure whether the head or shaft is damaged.

Stop using the hand blender immediately if liquid enters the motor unit, the shaft looks bent, or the appliance vibrates sharply.

Common causes

  • The container is too shallow.
  • The blade is brought out of the mixture while running.
  • The mixture is too thin for the speed used.
  • The appliance is moved too fast through the ingredients.

Simple prevention

  • Keep the head under the surface before starting.
  • Use short pulses at first.
  • Choose a container with enough height to contain the mix.
