Why does my garment steamer need refilling so often?

If the tank seems to empty faster than expected, the steamer may be running continuously, the steam setting may be higher than needed, or you may be using a model with a smaller reservoir. Stop if the appliance starts spitting water, because that can mean the water feed is not being regulated properly.

Match the setting to the task

1. Check whether your model has multiple steam settings. A higher setting uses water faster, so try a lower setting on lighter fabrics and compare the result.
2. Use short steaming passes instead of holding the steam button down continuously. Expected result: the tank should last longer between refills.
3. If your model has a lockable steam button, make sure you are using it only when appropriate. Continuous steam is useful for larger jobs, but it uses water quickly.

Check for actual leakage or excess output

4. Inspect the nozzle, hose and reservoir for signs of leaking. If water is escaping when the appliance is idle, stop using it.
5. After use, empty the remaining water and allow the steamer to cool. This does not increase tank size, but it helps the appliance start from a clean condition next time.

Stop if usage still seems abnormal

6. If the reservoir empties unusually fast even on a low setting, or if steam output is accompanied by dripping or overheating, discontinue use and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.
