Why does my decorative lamp dim or brighten unexpectedly when I use the dimmer?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 4:37 PM

If the brightness changes in an uneven or jumpy way, the dimmer may simply need a more careful setting, or the lamp may not like the way it is being used. The Smartwares IDE-60038 is dimmable, so some brightness variation is expected when adjusting it, but sudden jumps are not ideal. fileciteturn0file0turn0file9

What to try

  1. Switch the lamp off, then back on and test the dimmer again from a middle setting.
  2. Move the dimmer slowly instead of turning it quickly.
  3. Check whether the brightness is stable at one fixed setting.
  4. Test the lamp in another socket to rule out a poor supply connection.

What the result means

If the lamp behaves normally at one fixed level, the dimmer may just need slower adjustment. If the brightness jumps, cuts out or flashes even at a steady setting, the lamp or control may be faulty. Do not continue to turn the control repeatedly if the lamp reacts badly.

When to stop using it

Stop using the lamp if the dimmer area becomes hot, makes noise or smells burnt. Do not dismantle the control or use the lamp if brightness changes are linked to crackling or flicker. If the issue persists, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.
