Why is the ready light on but my waffles are still pale?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 2:47 PM

If the ready light is on but the waffles look underdone, the appliance may need a little longer, the batter may be too thick, or the waffles may need a different fill level. This is usually a cooking issue rather than a fault, but if the unit smells burnt or behaves erratically, stop using it.

What to check

  1. Leave the waffle maker closed for a little longer after the ready light appears. The light shows that the appliance has reached temperature, but thicker batter can still need more time to cook through.
  2. Check the amount of batter you are using. If the mould is too full, the waffle may cook unevenly, with pale areas or soft centres. If the amount is too small, the waffle may not reach the edge of the plate.
  3. Make sure the lid is fully closed during baking. A lid that lifts or sits unevenly can let heat escape and leave the top paler than the bottom.
  4. Try a slightly thinner batter next time. Very heavy mixtures can take longer to set and may give a pale surface even when the appliance is working normally.

Expected result

The waffle should turn evenly golden, release more easily when cooked, and feel set through the centre rather than wet or sticky.

When to stop using it

Stop using the appliance if the ready light behaves unpredictably, if the outside becomes unusually hot, or if you see smoke, smell burning or notice the plates heating unevenly after normal preheating. If the problem remains unresolved, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

Helpful prevention

  • Do not overfill the baking surface.
  • Let the batter rest if your recipe recommends it.
  • Wipe away overflow only once the appliance has cooled.
