Why is the water level window on my kettle hard to read?

A cloudy or difficult-to-read water level window is usually caused by limescale, steam residue or general surface build-up. These kettles all include a water level indicator, so keeping that area clean helps you fill the kettle safely and avoid boiling too little or too much water.

What to check

1. Switch off and unplug the kettle. Let it cool fully before cleaning the outside.
2. Wipe the indicator area with a soft, damp cloth and a little mild detergent if needed. Dry it straight away.
3. Check whether the cloudy area is inside the window or on the outer surface. If it is inside, scale is the likely cause.
4. Descale the kettle if the inside surface also looks chalky or stained, then rinse it well.
5. Refill with fresh water and confirm that the level marks are clear enough to use safely.

If the markings are still unreadable after careful cleaning, do not guess the fill level. Overfilling or underfilling can affect performance and safety.

When to stop using it

Stop using the kettle if you cannot read the level at all and the kettle has no other clear way to judge fill volume, or if cleaning reveals damage to the indicator area.

If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
