Why does the fryer basket coating or inner pan show peeling, flaking or scratches?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 12:57 PM

Visible peeling, flaking or deep scratches on the basket coating or inner pan should be taken seriously. Small cosmetic marks can happen with use, but damaged food-contact surfaces can affect cleaning, cooking performance and safe use.

Inspect the damaged area

  1. Switch the fryer off, unplug it and leave it to cool.
  2. Remove the basket and pan where your model allows easy disassembly.
  3. Check whether the mark is a light surface scratch, a flake of coating, or exposed metal.
  4. Look for loose fragments that could fall into food or oil.

What to do next

If the mark is only light and the surface is still intact, wash the parts gently with a soft sponge and avoid abrasive pads. If coating is peeling, flaking or lifting, do not keep cooking with that part.

When to stop using it

Stop using the fryer if coating pieces are coming away, if metal is exposed across a large area, or if the inner pan is warped, cracked or no longer safe to clean properly.

How to reduce further wear

  • Use wooden or silicone tools where suitable.
  • Do not scour the surface with sharp brushes or metal utensils.
  • Dry removable parts thoroughly after washing to help prevent corrosion.

If you are unsure whether the damage is only cosmetic or could affect safe use, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased and ask what next steps are available.
