Why does my fryer smell smoky after cleaning?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 12:56 PM

A smoky smell after cleaning usually means a part was not fully dried, detergent residue remains, or oil has collected in hidden areas. The manuals stress that all electrical parts must remain completely dry and that the fryer should cool before cleaning.

  1. Unplug the fryer and let every washable part dry completely before reuse. Expected result: the smell should reduce once moisture has evaporated. If smoke appears when you switch it on, stop using it.
  2. Check that no cleaning product has remained on the bowl, basket, lid or filter area. Expected result: a rinse and thorough drying should remove detergent smell. If the odour persists strongly, stop using the fryer.
  3. Inspect hidden corners, basket hooks and the area around the heating element for trapped grease. Expected result: removing residue should reduce the smoky smell. If you cannot clean the residue safely, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.
  4. Before frying again, heat the fryer only when it is fully dry and correctly assembled. Expected result: there should be no burning smell from leftover moisture. If the smell becomes electrical, stop using the appliance immediately.

Do not submerge electrical parts or switch the fryer on while it is still damp. If the appliance emits smoke, sparks or an acrid smell, stop using it at once.
