Why does my contact grill lid sit too loose on thin food?

If the lid feels loose when you grill a thin sandwich, the floating lid may simply be moving freely because there is not enough height in the food to support it. That can be normal, but the lid should still settle safely without slipping, scraping or bouncing. Stop using the appliance if the lid will not stay in position, the lock does not hold, or any part appears damaged or unstable. If the matter remains unclear, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

Understand what the floating lid should do

A floating lid is designed to rest over different food heights, so some movement is expected. The aim is even contact, not a rigid fixed position.

Check the lock and lid movement

1. Unplug the grill and let it cool.
2. Open and close the lid several times without food to feel for smooth movement.
3. If your model has a safety lock, check whether it engages and releases normally.
4. Place a thicker item, such as a filled panini, and see whether the lid sits more securely.

If the lid behaves normally with thicker food, the issue is probably just the low height of the food you are using. If the lid still drops unevenly, slips sideways or feels rough, that is a warning sign.

Stop using the grill if you notice

• a lock that no longer holds
• a lid that rubs, sticks or drops suddenly
• visible damage at the hinge or handle area
