Why does my portable air conditioner stop after a short time?

If your portable air conditioner starts normally and then stops, it may be protecting itself because of heat, a full tank or poor airflow. Work through the checks below, and stop using the unit if it overheats, smells burnt or keeps cutting out in a way that feels unsafe.

1. Check whether the water full indicator is on or blinking, then empty the tank if needed. Expected result: the appliance should restart or remain on once the condensate is cleared.
2. Make sure the room is not smaller than the unit is intended for, and that the room is not being overheated by open windows, direct sun or other heat sources. Expected result: the appliance should run for longer without cycling off too early.
3. Inspect the air inlet and exhaust hose for dust, blockage or poor connection. Restricted airflow can cause the unit to work harder and shut down. Expected result: the fan should move air more freely and the machine should stay on more consistently.
4. If the appliance has been running in a very warm room, switch it off and allow it to cool before trying again. Expected result: after cooling, it should restart normally.

When to stop using the appliance

Stop using the air conditioner if it repeatedly shuts off with no clear cause, if the power cord becomes hot, or if the casing feels excessively warm. Do not cover the air outlets or attempt internal repairs. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
