A mild stored smell can come from packaging, dust or trapped moisture, especially if the blanket has been kept in a bag or cupboard. Stop using it at once if the smell is sharp, burning or accompanied by heat, smoke, discolouration or damage.
Air it out before testing again
- Unplug the blanket and place it somewhere dry and well ventilated.
- Check that it has been stored folded neatly and not tightly compressed.
- Inspect the fabric and cable for moisture, mould or visible wear.
Some machine washable blankets can pick up a stale smell in storage, but that should fade once aired. A smell that does not fade, or becomes stronger during use, needs more caution.
Test safely
- Reconnect the blanket and run it briefly on the lowest setting.
- Stay nearby and check whether the smell reduces after a short warm-up.
- If the smell remains, switch off and unplug it immediately.
Stop using the product if
- The smell turns hot, sharp or burnt
- The fabric feels unusually warm in one area
- You see any damage to the controller, plug or cable
If the smell does not clear after airing and a brief safe test, stop using the blanket and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased. The retailer can explain the available next steps.
