Why does my microwave smell musty or stale after it has been stored?

A musty or stale smell after storage is often caused by trapped moisture, dust or leftover food residue. Stop using the microwave if the smell becomes hot, sharp or smoky, or if you see visible damage inside the cavity.

Freshen the cavity safely

1. Unplug the microwave and let it cool if it has been used recently.
2. Remove the glass plate and ring, then wash and dry them thoroughly.
3. Wipe the cavity, door seal and underside of the turntable area with a damp cloth, then dry everything fully.

If the smell fades after cleaning and airing, it was probably caused by residue or trapped moisture. If it remains strong, the next check is ventilation and storage conditions.

Check storage and surroundings

1. Make sure the microwave has not been covered by cloths, paper or other items that hold damp air inside.
2. Leave the door open for a short period when the appliance is dry and unused, if your household routines allow it.
3. Confirm the cabinet space around the microwave is not damp or greasy.

A lingering odour that improves with airing is usually maintenance-related. A smell that returns during use, especially with heat, needs closer attention.
