Why is my fire extinguisher not easy to see or reach where it is mounted?

If an extinguisher is hidden, blocked, or mounted too high or too low, it can be difficult to use quickly in an emergency. The problem may be the mounting position rather than the extinguisher itself, but it still needs fixing because accessibility is part of safe installation. The instructions say the extinguisher must be easy to access, clearly visible, and mounted between 1 and 1.5 metres from the floor.

1. Stand back and check whether the extinguisher can be seen immediately from the normal approach route. Look for furniture, coats, boxes, or other items blocking the view.
2. Confirm the mounting height. If it is noticeably above or below the recommended range, it may be awkward to remove quickly and safely.
3. Check whether the bracket is fixed in a place where a fire could block access, or in a narrow area where the unit could be knocked loose. The instructions say these locations should be avoided.
4. If the extinguisher is obstructed or badly positioned, stop treating that location as suitable for emergency use until it is corrected.
5. Contact the retailer or store where it was purchased if you need advice on the safest next step.

For prevention, keep the mounting point clear, check it during routine home safety walks, and make sure the label and pressure indicator can be read without moving the unit.
