Why does my garment steamer leave white flakes or marks on fabric?

White flakes or pale residue usually point to mineral deposits in the steamer or water that is not suitable for the appliance. Stop using the product if deposits are hot, if they fall from the steam head in clumps, or if the fabric appears scorched rather than marked by residue.

Reduce deposits and residue

1. Empty any remaining water after each use. One manual warns that water left in the appliance for a long time can deteriorate and should be drained after use or before storage. Expected result: less residue next time.
2. Use distilled or demineralised water if the manual for your model recommends it. The official instructions note this can prolong the life of the appliance. Expected result: the steam becomes cleaner and deposits reduce.
3. Run the model’s descaling procedure if steam output has also dropped. The manuals describe vinegar and water cleaning on some units to remove mineral build-up. Expected result: flakes lessen and steam flow improves after cleaning.
4. If the marks continue after cleaning, stop steaming the garment. Persistent residue can indicate a serious scale problem or internal fault.
