Why is my vacuum cleaner making a rattling or vibrating noise?

A rattling or vibrating sound usually means something is loose, caught in the brush or moving unevenly through the air path. Switch the cleaner off and unplug it before you inspect it. Do not continue using it if the noise is harsh, metallic or accompanied by a burning smell.
