Why does my portable air conditioner smell damp after storage?

A damp or stale smell after storage usually comes from moisture left inside the unit or filter area. Before using it again, check the filter, dry any accessible parts and make sure the appliance has been stored cleanly and fully drained.

Freshen the air path safely

1. Unplug the unit before cleaning.
2. Open the inlet grille and remove the air filter.
3. Wash the filter with neutral detergent in lukewarm water, then let it dry completely out of direct sunlight.
4. Refit the dry filter and confirm the grille closes properly.

If the smell remains, check for leftover water in the tank or drainage area.

Check for stored moisture

• Drain any remaining water from the tank before restart.
• Look for signs of standing water around the base or drain point.
• Make sure the unit was stored upright on a stable surface.

A slight smell at first use can happen after storage, but it should fade once the filter and internal moisture are dealt with. If it does not fade, there may be mould or contamination inside the appliance.
