Why does my fryer keep splashing oil when I add food?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 12:56 PM

Strong splashing usually happens when the food is wet, icy, or added too quickly, or when too much food is dropped into the basket at once. The supplied manuals say food should be dry before frying and should be lowered into the oil slowly to prevent excessive bubbling.

  1. Turn the fryer off and let the oil settle before checking anything else. Expected result: the bubbling should calm down. If hot oil is still spitting hard, stop using the fryer.
  2. Check the food for surface moisture, ice crystals or marinade. Pat food dry first and remove loose ice from frozen items. Expected result: drier food should reduce splashing. If the fryer still spits violently with dry food, stop using it.
  3. Lower the basket in slowly instead of tipping food straight into the oil. Expected result: the oil should react more gently. If splashing remains severe, do not continue.
  4. Confirm that the bowl is not overfilled and that the oil level is within the marked range. Expected result: the fryer should have enough room to boil safely. If the oil is above the mark or foam rises unexpectedly, stop using the product.

If you see water, hear aggressive crackling, or the fryer starts overflowing, stop using it immediately. Let it cool before cleaning and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased if safe use is uncertain.
